Active engines: Thermodynamics moves forward

چکیده
Abstract The study of thermal heat engines was pivotal to establishing the principles equilibrium thermodynamics, with implications far wider than only engine optimization. For nonequilibrium systems, which by definition dissipate energy even at rest, how best convert such dissipation into useful work is still largely an outstanding question, similar potential illuminate general physical principles. We review recent theoretical progress in studying performances operating active matter, where particles are driven individual self-propulsion. distinguish two main classes, either autonomous exploiting a particle current, or cyclic applying periodic transformation system, and present strategies put forward so for delineate limitations previous studies, propose some future perspectives, view building consistent thermodynamic framework from equilibrium.

Animal Behavior: Fly Flight Moves Forward
A new study has resolved the paradox of how flies maintain reflexive aversion to your approaching swatter, whilst tolerating similar visual signals during normal forward flight.
متن کاملThe cyclin-dependent kinase pathway moves forward.
The cell cycle of mammalian cells is divided into four phases: G1 (first gap), S (DNA synthesis), G2 (second gap), and M (mitosis). Quiescent cells that have not entered the cell cycle are referred to as being in G0. Progression through the cell cycle requires the activation of cyclindependent kinases (CDKs). CDK activation is dependent on the association of the CDK with a cyclin regulatory sub...
متن کاملThermodynamics of chemical Marangoni-driven engines.
The goal of this paper is to perform a general thermodynamic study of Marangoni-driven engines in which chemical energy is directly transformed into mechanical motion. Given that this topic has not been discussed before, we will explore here the most basic and fundamental aspects of the phenomena at work, which leads to a number of interesting observations typical of controversies in classical ...
متن کاملVietnam moves forward with harm reduction: an assessment of progress.
Historically, the response of the Vietnamese government to illicit drug use and HIV has been slow and ineffective. However, 2006 saw the government formally endorse harm reduction interventions. This paper examines the views of senior key informants inside Vietnam on the development of an advocacy strategy for harm reduction. Twenty-nine informants were interviewed across public health, public ...
